    Dependence Logic with Generalized Quantifiers: Axiomatizations

    We prove two completeness results, one for the extension of dependence logic by a monotone generalized quantifier Q with weak interpretation, weak in the meaning that the interpretation of Q varies with the structures. The second result considers the extension of dependence logic where Q is interpreted as "there exists uncountable many." Both of the axiomatizations are shown to be sound and complete for FO(Q) consequences.Comment: 17 page

    AbstractRabbit muscle enolase was found to be phosphorylated in vitro by calcium-activated phospholipid-dependent protein kinase. The extent of incorporation (about 0.6 mol/mol subunit) and the apparent Km for the reaction (3.0 μM subunit) were determined. Kinetic studies on the unphosphorylated and phosphorylated enzymes displayed an unexpected effect of phosphorylation resulting in activation of the forward reaction and inhibition of the backward one

    Mass Fractionation and Energy Distribution of Sputtered Monatomic Positive Ions

    Secondary ion yields in sputtering depend significantly on the mass of the emitted species. Ionization as observed by secondary ion mass spectrometry is characterized by isotope fractionation; the yield of an isotope ion of mass Mi being proportional to M-, where a varies with the emitted species, its kinetic energy Ek, and the matrix. By means of SIMS, isotope ratios have been measured for ions at energies up to ca 120 eV in different metallic matrices. For singly charged positive monatomic ions, a has been found to range between O and ca 4. While a may drop steeply at low or moderate Ek, at higher energies the gradient decreases and usually becomes positive. To some extent the trends of a are complementary to those of the energy dependence of elemental ion yields. In the present work, the main tendencies are surveyed for pure element matrices as well as for several elements sputtered from a given metallic matrix. It is attempted to correlate a with the energy distributions of ionic yields. Isotope effects appear inherent in all three basic mechanisms of ion emission, i.e., in sputter yield, ionization, and charge survival

    Considering Polymorphism in Change-Based Test Suite Reduction

    With the increasing popularity of continuous integration, algorithms for selecting the minimal test-suite to cover a given set of changes are in order. This paper reports on how polymorphism can handle false negatives in a previous algorithm which uses method-level changes in the base-code to deduce which tests need to be rerun. We compare the approach with and without polymorphism on two distinct cases ---PMD and CruiseControl--- and discovered an interesting trade-off: incorporating polymorphism results in more relevant tests to be included in the test suite (hence improves accuracy), however comes at the cost of a larger test suite (hence increases the time to run the minimal test-suite).Comment: The final publication is available at link.springer.co

    Experimental and theoretical lifetimes and transition probabilities in Sb I

    We present experimental atomic lifetimes for 12 levels in Sb I, out of which seven are reported for the first time. The levels belong to the 5p2^2(3^3P)6s 2^{2}P, 4^{4}P and 5p2^2(3^3P)5d 4^{4}P, 4^{4}F and 2^{2}F terms. The lifetimes were measured using time-resolved laser-induced fluorescence. In addition, we report new calculations of transition probabilities in Sb I using a Multiconfigurational Dirac-Hartree-Fock method. The physical model being tested through comparisons between theoretical and experimental lifetimes for 5d and 6s levels. The lifetimes of the 5d 4^4F3/2,5/2,7/2_{3/2, 5/2, 7/2} levels (19.5, 7.8 and 54 ns, respectively) depend strongly on the JJ-value. This is explained by different degrees of level mixing for the different levels in the 4^4F term.Comment: 10 page

    Copepod reproductive effort and oxidative status as responses to warming in the marine environment

    The marine ecosystems are under severe climate change-induced stress globally. The Baltic Sea is especially vulnerable to ongoing changes, such as warming. The aim of this study was to measure eco-physiological responses of a key copepod species to elevated temperature in an experiment, and by collecting field samples in the western Gulf of Finland. The potential trade-off between reproductive output and oxidative balance in copepods during thermal stress was studied by incubating female Acartia sp. for reproduction rate and oxidative stress measurements in ambient and elevated temperatures. Our field observations show that the glutathione cycle had a clear response in increasing stress and possibly had an important role in preventing oxidative damage: Lipid peroxidation and ratio of reduced and oxidized glutathione were negatively correlated throughout the study. Moreover, glutathione-s-transferase activated in late July when the sea water temperature was exceptionally high and Acartia sp. experienced high oxidative stress. The combined effect of a heatwave, increased cyanobacteria, and decreased dinoflagellate abundance may have caused larger variability in reproductive output in the field. An increase of 7 degrees C had a negative effect on egg production rate in the experiment. However, the effect on reproduction was relatively small, implying that Acartia sp. can tolerate warming at least within the temperature range of 9-16 degrees C. However, our data from the experiment suggest a link between reproductive success and oxidative stress during warming, shown as a significant combined effect of temperature and catalase on egg production rate.Peer reviewe

    Survival of Clostridium perfringens During Simulated Transport and Stability of Some Plasmid-borne Toxin Genes under Aerobic Conditions

    Clostridium perfringens is a pathogen of great concern in veterinary medicine, because it causes enteric diseases and different types of toxaemias in domesticated animals. It is important that bacteria in tissue samples, which have been collected in the field, survive and for the classification of C. perfringens into the correct toxin group, it is crucial that plasmid-borne genes are not lost during transportation or in the diagnostic laboratory. The objectives of this study were to investigate the survival of C. perfringens in a simulated transport of field samples and to determine the stability of the plasmid-borne toxin genes cpb1 and etx after storage at room temperature and at 4°C. Stability of the plasmid-borne genes cpb1 and etx of C. perfringens CCUG 2035, and cpb2 from C. perfringens CIP 106526, JF 2255 and 6 field isolates in aerobic atmosphere was also studied. Survival of C. perfringens was similar in all experiments. The cpb1 and etx genes were detected in all isolates from samples stored either at room temperature or at 4°C for 24–44 h. Repeated aerobic treatment of C. perfringens CCUG 2035 and CIP 106526 did not result in the loss of the plasmid-borne genes cpb1, cpb2 or etx. Plasmid-borne genes in C. perfringens were found to be more stable than generally reported. Therefore, C. perfringens toxinotyping by PCR can be performed reliably, as the risk of plasmid loss seems to be a minor problem
